Myrtle Beach to Carolina Beach

 Left about 7:30. Tide still going out. SV RENAISSANCE just grounded outside the marinas, and was now waiting the rising tide.

    Temps were in the 60's and low 70's, the breezes kicked up around mid-morning. Due to the number of inlets today, we had changing currents all day due to Little River, Shallotte’s, Follies, and Cape Fear Inlets. The current gods finally were kind as we headed East through Snow's Cut!

     SV HAPPY TRAILS passed us just before we entered the Cape Fear River. As we pulled into Carolina Beach Mooring Field, HAPPY TRAILS was already on a mooring ball. We were able to snag the #2 mooring ball, near the town dock.  It makes it much easier to walk Bailey at night and in the morning.

     Both of us went to shore to walk Bailey and to check out the beach.  Even though it was a weekday, the beach was the most crowded we have seen. With everyone home due to the quarantine, they took advantage of the sun, sand and water, while minding the social distance recommendations.

     We detoured on our way back to the boat to say “hi” to Kathy and Mike. While chatting, I saw the head of a Loggerhead turtle come up about 15 feet from the boat.  With a head that was about 8-10 inches, I could only imagine just how big the carapace is!

     Since we didn’t need the Honda to charge the batteries, after dinner, we just read for a while and called it a day.

     It was another long day. We left Georgetown by 7:30 in the hope of catching the flood tide. Kathy and Mike were already gone. We were about a half hour too early, so we fought the current for the first few hours.  If you have to have somewhere to slowly watch the scenery, the Waccamaw River doesn't disappoint:  Knobby-kneed Cyprus trees, floating water lilies, sun bathing turtles, ospreys nesting as well as fishing, a golden eagle gliding through the trees in the marshes;  windy, forested river bends, and vegetation that finds a way to survive on fallen trees and old trees that are hollow, but still has a few green branches.

     There is a lot of home construction in southern Myrtle Beach along the ICW. Barefoot Landing has had a lot of new things added, especially eateries. Lots of people were out and practicing social distancing. Others we out enjoying being out on the water and celebrating Mother's Day.

     When we pulled into Myrtle Beach Yacht Club, SV HAPPY TRAILS was already docked by the fuel dock.

St Johns to Georgetown

     Our original plan was to wait until after the 9 am opening and pull into Isle of Palms (only 3.5 hours away) for the night, as both the Wapoo Creek and The Ben Sawyer have opening restrictions.  That would also lessen the travel hours to out next spot, Georgetown. When attempting to make reservations, there was no dockage available at Isle of Palms and we are on the wait list for Tyler's Cove. The Beaches, restaurants with outdoor seating will open up today, which probably explains the full marinas. After some plotting, discussion, and planning, it was decided to make the Wapoo before 7 am and clear The Ben Sawyer before 9, when the hourly openings begin. So . . . .

          We left St John's at 5:45 am and cleared the Wapoo by 6:30. It was a cloudy morning so sun rise was a nonevent, but shortly thereafter the sun peeked out for a while.  The temp when we left was 63 degrees. However, once on the Ashley River, the 20+ mph winds from the north appeared and the temp quickly fell to 50, but felt like a raw 46! We bundled in extra layers and put up the enclosure. What a difference!

    We went through Isle of Palms and McClellenville at high and mid-rise, but at dead low, there would have been some tricky spots.

    The skies cleared, and we enjoyed this beautiful stretch of the ICW. The current was against us for a greater part of the day, which I guess you could say, gave us more time to enjoy the scenery.

     Since we arrived around 5:30, the Marina office had closed. We were told to tie up on the inside of the face dock to the west.  As we approached, SV HAPPY TRAILS was also tied up at the end of the dock! 

     Once docked, I took Bailey for her walk. Kathy & Mike had returned from their bike ride and were talking with Pete.  Their plans for the Great Loop are probably being delayed a year. The Corona Virus 19 restrictions have delayed lock repairs in Northern New York so they are reassessing their options.

Week Four in St. John’s, NC

Friday, 5/1/20 -  Thursday, 5/7/20 ~

         

     
This week, we continued doing standard chores, chilling at the dock, reading, talking with neighbors, but keeping social distancing and periodic forays to the stores for provisions, boat or hardware. Only did drive throughs a couple of times just for a break.  We will save our restaurant visits for next trip, where we should be able to enjoy the experience.  Pete had work to keep busy for part of the days and managed to get in about 14 hours of fishing, but unfortunately no catching.  In all that time he only had 2 nibbles on the lines, but no bites.

     Tomorrow, we will be traveling on the water again!

Week Three in St. John’s, SC

Friday, 4/24/20 ~ It was a slow day. Pete had some work to do this morning.  We spent the afternoon sitting up above, enjoying the sun, mind temperatures and breezes.  Even managed to get in some reading.

Saturday, 4/25/20 ~ It is another beautiful day.  Pete took advantage of the tides and headed over to try fishing again.  Today, there was not even a single nibble!
      We did the cockpit thing again and enjoyed reading and watching boats coming and going up and down the Stono River (and rocking the boats here in the marina as they did.) 
     We headed over to West Marine for FSR, TP, and a fishing lure.  We will have to come back for the FSR.  It should be in the delivery due on Thursday.  I don't think that the boat will mind its "brown frown" a little longer.  The brown frown is caused by the tannin in the water, caused by decomposing vegetation,  The Chesapeake is notorious for it.  The FSR is like one of those wonders "as seen on TV!"  Place some on a sponge wipe over the area, then just sit back for a few minutes, rinse and the brown is gone!

     We then stopped at Walgreens for some sun tan lotion, then onto Bessinger"s BBQ over on Savannah Highway.  They had the most stars: 2200 and 4.7 Stars!  I tried to order on line, but it was declined.  I found out once I went in that they were all out of brisket so the original order couldn't be fulfilled.  Instead, we had pulled pork, BBQ with steak fries and a (single) onion ring.  My onion ring had to be an inch in diameter around a much smaller onion ring.  The batter was slightly sweet and the ring was oh so good!  We liked it better than the BBQ.  They used a honey mustard sauce rather than the tomato based of other places.  I guess it depends on what you like.
         

Sunday, 4/26/20 ~  While Pete headed over to try fishing again, I did some chores aboard. He still hasn't caught anything.  Today, he actually had about a 6 inch fish nibble on the lure, and follow it over to the dock,but it didn't bit to set the hook.  Pete is getting a little bit frustrated.  He has done a lot of research an reading and watching videos.  He has also spoken to a number of people for advise, but it hasn't paid off yet.
     Getting a little stir crazy, we opted to take a ride just to see the sights.  Unfortunately, Kiawah Island requires a pass to get on to the island.  So instead we headed over to Folly Beach.  As we got closer, electronic sighs informed us of the police check point ahead.  So we turned around and headed over to Charleston.  It was a beautiful, but windy day.  Winds were climbing into the 20's with gusts 30+ mph, but there were quite a few people and dogs out for walks, especially along the sea wall.  The streets were mostly deserted.  So was the market and all the horse barns, while the carriages were parked.  There is a lot of construction happening along the water front.  Something is being built next  to The Landing Restaurant, formerly the Fleet Reserve Restaurant.  I guess this was a good time to do all this work without tourists.

     We found a place open  to get a treat. The Belgian Gelato, served some of the best gelato we have had.  Their "Boca" (chocolate hazelnut) with vanilla in a home-made waffle cone (which they have about 5 different flavors) is outrageous. Fresh strawberries are added to home made vanilla ice cream, blended with milk and makes the best strawberry milk shake.

Monday, 4/27/20 ~  We knew that the temperatures would fall last night.  We figured that if we just cracked the hatch over the bed, we should be all right.  Pete got up at 6 to use the head and got cold.  He put the afghan on me and dove under the covers when he returned to bed.  He never really warmed up by the time he came back from waking Bailey.  He sat working for the better part of the morning with the jacket still on.  He finally warmed up.  I, on the other hand, remained comfortably warm, even once out of bed.
    The rest of the day was relaxing; reading and updating the blog.  I am keeping more current, finally!!!

Tuesday, 4/28/20 ~ After cleaning and straightening up, we headed over to Dunkin for a coffee and a treat.  Then it was over to do some food shopping.  The shelves are as not as well stock as normal. The cleaning / paper goods isle is pretty empty, and the meats selection is more limited than normal. Thankfully, I was able to get most things on my list.

Wednesday, 4/29/20 ~ While Pete worked, I headed over to due laundry.  Chris and Sara were aboard their Catalina 385. We talked for a while before discussing their unique dodger and bimini.  The previous owners had a canvas maker in Annapolis design a tall rectangular bimini that goes forward to also serve as the dodger. The forward panels extend slightly angled to form a tall windshield. The screens come down 3/4 to the rail, but outside the bimini frame work and extend forward of the side panel of the bimini.  As a result, you have to board mid-ship and slide between the screen to the outside rail and the bimini on the cabin.  The enclosure also attaches to these outside zippers and attach to the boat along the rail for the catwalk.  Since Chris works during the day, the cockpit is her comfortable and scenic office.  It is a shame that they are now looking for a trawler since they do very little sailing.

Thursday, 4/30/20 ~ It was windy and rainy for most of the day. While Pete worked, I worked on the blog, read and relaxed.

Week Two in St. John’s, SC

Friday. 4/17/20 ~  While Pete prepped for a 10:30 conference call, I was able to scrub the floors.

     Once the call was complete, Pete and I headed out to “forage.”  BJ’s was first on our list.  Since it was about 35 minutes from here, we stopped at a Chick-Fil-A for salad lunches.  Once done at BJ's, we headed to Harris Teeter and the Post Office.  The only thing I didn’t get was Clorox wipes.  The stores were pretty empty of people, but pretty well stocked.  There are now concerns about meat processing plants and the food supply. Smithfield Pork processing is closed due to so many employees testing positive. We are going to keep the freezer full when possible, just in case.

Saturday, 4/18/20 ~ I enjoyed the view from the cockpit by chillin’, relaxing and reading, while Pete gave Bailey a bath and then headed to Lowe’s.  All he needed is a specific tool, but there were only 2 cashiers and a line that went to the back of the store.  He decided to come back to the store during the week, and hopefully, find less people. He also picked up some French Bread so I can make sausage and pepper Parmesan for dinner.

     Being such a pretty day, he headed over to try fishing again.  He did a lot of casting, but no catching! Perhaps another day.

     Today was the second internet meeting of CCYC, our sailing club on the Chesapeake.  There were about 15 “boats” attending and not just from the Chesapeake area (Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey) but 2 from Big Majors Cay in the Bahamas, Florida, Arizona, and 2 of us in South Carolina.  It was so much fun, Mike said he would host one every 2 weeks.  It is a great way to catch up with friends.  Next time I will make sure that we have snacks and drinks!

Sunday, 4/19/20 ~ The morning was wonderful. It was sunny, low 70’s gentle breezes and a great time to take a walk and take a photo or two. 
       

     It was good that we took advantage of such a nice morning.  By 1:30 the storm front approached.  Winds increased, thunder and lightning was around us and the heavy rains began.  Pete read and helped me defrost and repack the freezer.  I wrote the blog and am caught up.  However, I now need to process the remaining photos so I can blitz the posting.  Hopefully, it will be completed in a few days.  That’s my goal. Hope it works!

Monday, 4/20/20 ~ Another severe weather front was predicted between 2 and 10 am. Thankfully, it never fully materialized.  We had some heavy rains and some wind, but nothing unusual.
    After breakfast, I exercised on board. Since I couldn’t shake headache, I opted to catch a nap for a good part of the afternoon. It did help.
     Pete after some work, Pete headed out to get his tool at Lowe's. This time there were no lines. Once back, he sat up above to read.

Tuesday, 4/21/20 ~ Right now the fridge is more full than usual as we are making sure we are pretty well stocked.  However, the ice was pretty thick on the element so I had to unpack it and defrosted the fridge.  I took advantage of the defrosting time to get in my walk. Pete cleaned it up so that I could put everything back in.
     It was fun taking some photos of flowers on the walk.  I do miss gardening, but at least I can enjoy others' efforts.

     After lunch, Pete headed over to fish. Unfortunately it hasn't become "catching" yet.
     It was the prefect time to proof the blog and prep the photos. I was able to post more to the blog!

Wednesday, 4/22/20 ~ While the car was being serviced, we ran some errands.  While shopping last week, I mistakenly picked up a bag of self-rising flour instead of all purpose flour.  Since the store was not accepting any returns, I still purchased the flour needed plus a few other items.  When the cashier checked the bag that had the wrong flour, I explained what had happened and asked if she or anyone she knew could use it. Thankfully it will be put to great use instead of the trash!
     We also needed a few things from Walmart, where I found some yarn and crochet needles for Pete's mom. She is bored so she asked the staff for yarn and needle, but they are very light and hard for her to work with.  Hopefully, she like the colors and thicker textures of the three skeins we purchased.  Our next stop was the Post Office so we could send it on its way.

Thursday, 4/23/20 ~ Pete and George were busy with a rush project all morning.
     I was able to post more to the blog, so I am pretty caught up since I am doing a week at a time while in port. Perhaps I will update today's after dinner and post.  Then I will be current! YEA

     It looks like we are in for another good storm later today. Winds are already picking up and will continue into the mid 20's tomorrow.
      By 5 pm, the storm had arrived.  Winds drove the rains for a good 2-3 hours.  We could barely see the bridge about 100 feet away.  We found two small leaks: one in the starboard hatch coming though the gasket, the other from the hatch in the bathroom, gasket again. Thankfully, it were very slow leaks.  The rain was so heavy that we couldn't get any satellite reception for the TV, but it was a good opportunity to read.

Friday, 4/10/20 ~ After breakfast, Pete got everything he thought he might need ready and, then with me serving as gopher, he proceeded to work his most dreaded thing – the head!  After 6 hours, with a lot of stretching, sweat and a few choice words, a new hose, and a super Cloroxed bathroom, we have success!

     Both of us will sleep well tonight. . . and have a very short walk to the head!

Saturday, 4/11/20 ~ Pete wanted to check out fishing gear, so he invited me to join him at Walmart.  I took advantage to also do some grocery shopping.  The fishing gear was junk, but the supermarket was fairly well stocked.  I still can’t get Clorox spray or wipes, face masks or bandannas, but no problems getting meat and other provisions.

     We brought the groceries back to the boat, had lunch and then while I put things away, Pete headed off to a local fishing store where the salesman was very helpful and informative. (They were only allowing 2 people in at a time.) He came home with a decent rod, reel and tackle for a new hobby! 

    After dinner I read, while Pete did more research on fishing, including an app that helps identify fish.

Sunday, 4/12/20 ~ We prepped the boat for strong winds that are predicted to hit over the next 24 hours.  Pete doubled up lines and hung extra fenders and we made sure that things were secured and protected.  It didn’t take that long, because we regularly secure things when we are done with them.

     I started the morning, digging the crock pot out of the bow storage. I am making Corned Beef for dinner.  Ever since speaking with my sisters I have been craving a good corned beef.  Today’s as good as any to make it.  Especially since it is windy, rainy and cold!  We were not disappointed.  It was a pretty lean cut, but the fatty pad was still attached.  It was tasty and tender. So were the potatoes and carrots.!  YUM!

Monday, 4/13/20 ~  The winds were blowing 25-30 mph out of the SSE and the boat was rocking most of the night. Pete was even able to feel when the ebb current started to race around 3 am. When we woke before 7, there was already a tornado watch in effect for this area along with alerts for lightning, thunder, high winds, flooding, high surf, rip currents and pollen. Pete hurried to get Bailey’s walk in before the storms arrived in full.  His window was only 10 minutes and they made it back just as the first rains began to fall.  The lightning and thunder had already started.

     Once back on board, hunkered down and waited for the storms to pass. The winds were easily 35- 40 mph with gusts over 50! I kept the radio on and there were two additional tornado warnings: one north and one south of here. By afternoon the clouds dispersed, the winds lightened, the sun came out and the temperatures rose. By evening, there were reports of 7-9 tornadoes in South Carolina. One was an F-3, two others were F-2, and a few possible F-1/F-0, or sheer wind damage.  Waiting on the weather service to confirm.  Unfortunately, there were also 9 reported deaths. The closest tornado to us was down at Edisto Beach, around 25 miles from here. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the storms.

     I spent the afternoon starting to post the blogs to the internet. I am making good progress.

Tuesday, 4/14/20 ~  Pete worked half a day and tried his hand at fishing.  He enjoyed the 2 hours, had a few nibbles, but no bites.  Perhaps next time.

     I was able to finish posting everything that is ready to the blog.  I am almost caught up. I only have the past 10 days to finish.  However, knowing me, I will probably have 2+ weeks to post when they are ready. It is a shame to waste such a pretty day inside the boat, but this is the only way I will get caught up.

     Tonight’s local news reported that 20 tornadoes hit South Carolina yesterday. Due to the shelter in place and social distancing, the authorities though there might be more, but, thankfully, fatalities have not increased.

Wednesday, 4/15/20 ~  Pete had a full day of work; I did too!  I deep cleaned ¾ of the boat.  I still have the port side of the salon and the floor, but windows and woodwork were cleaned, shelves emptied, cleaned and reorganized as well as some storage areas.  I finally ran out of time and energy.

Thursday, 4/16/20 ~  As Pete settled in for a busy work morning, I headed up to do 4 loads of laundry.  Besides having 2 weeks’ worth of laundry, I stripped all the towels AND the rugs. Me and the trusty wagon headed up.  There were 3 others currently doing laundry.  I was able to visit with Ashley, her boyfriend, Fred, Chris from a few boats down from us.  Two machines are not working properly, so between other and the non-working machines, I had staggered my loads.  I sent the better part of 4 hours doing laundry.  Pete felt sorry for me and offered to bring up lunch, but I decided to eat it when I was done. 

     I was back by 2. Brought down the bags of laundry, hung the rugs to dry on the lines and ate by 2:30.  Once the laundry was put away, I didn’t feel guilty taking an hour nap.
