Week 5 ~ Morehead City, NC to River Dunes, Oriental, NC

Saturday, 5/7/22 ~ Harbor Village, Hempstead to Morehead City YM, NC
Today:           65.0 miles           10.0 hours           ICW ST Mile: 203.7
Total:          1827.9 miles        365.35 hours

The winds died out overnight and were nonexistent when we departed at 6:40 this morning. Unfortunately, the No-see-ums and other bugs were once again out in force! The slight breeze that had begun once we were underway, traveled the same speed as the boat, resulting in those pests sticking around for another hour or so!

The winds continued to build during the day and so did the clouds. SSE winds also steered the pop-up storms that were developing inland and working their way towards us. We had a brief period of sprinkles, but the storms skirted to our WNW. As we pulled into the approach to the marina, the skies were very dark to the west and areas of downpours could be seen, but missed us.

We were tied to the dock by 4:30 As soon as we were docked, Pete was able to take the scooter and pick up my prescriptions at Walgreens about a mile from here. I run out tonight and the pharmacy closes at 6. He made it with no problems.

We are tied up behind MV SEA GEM on the face dock. They have passed us over the past few days, and we discovered we stayed at the same marinas, just never met. We agreed to meet Susan and Darren for appetizers and chatted for a quite a while. They are from Washington State and have sailed, hiked, and grounded in the San Juan Islands aboard their previous boat, which was a catamaran. They just brought this Cruiser 415. There is plenty to learn about this new-to-them boat. This was their shakedown cruise. They plan on doing The Loop this year,

Sunday, 5/8/22 ~ Morehead City ~ Day 2

Bailey woke Pete up at 2 pacing and whimpering. He put on shorts and a tee shirt and took her for a walk. When we closed up last night it had been in the low 70’s. Now, the temperature was 58 degrees with winds out of the north at 25-30 mph. Bailey didn’t want to return to the rocking boat and refused to walk faster. Then she refused to get into position to be lifted on board. Pete was not a happy camper. Once on board, it took him more than 2 hours to warm up and fall back to sleep. Bailey had the audacity to complain again about the rocking, and Pete just yelled at her. Thankfully, she finally settled down.
It was cold, raw and very windy all day. After putting up a crock pot of soup, there was reading, napping, and making a big dent in editing of photos was a great way to spend the day. I am so glad I downloaded them at St. James Marina, because the WiFi here at Morehead City is really, really bad. I can do about ¾ of the blog offline and only need the WiFi so I can post to the web. I spent the day on photos. Once things are ready, I will use our portable WiFi.
By 1 pm, 2 motor cats had tied up to the docks. I can’t imagine what their trip must have been like to get here. One of the boats is MC DONE DIGGIN (I sure there is a story there!) We had seen them in Stock Island a few years ago and it looks like they have completed The Loop.
The hardy ham, bean, and vegetable soup with homemade Red Lobster Garlic Cheese Biscuits were perfect for such a raw, cold, windy (25-30 with gusts to 40!) day.
By the way, the shorts and light weight shirts have been put aside for the jeans, heavy long sleeve shirts and heat! Bailey didn’t complain at all about the rocking, perhaps due to the fact her people were close by.
A great day for reading, napping, and working on photos.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the great moms I know!

Monday, 5/9/22 ~ Morehead City ~ Day 3

Bailey has accepted, begrudgingly, the movement of the boat due to the wind. We are seeing steady winds of 20 with gusts over 30 from the NNE. Pete saw on Facebook, that a boat (of unknown style, size, or common sense) tried to get the Alligator River Bridge to open. The bridge tender couldn’t open as winds exceeded 25 mph.

Pete worked until about 2:30. He has another project that he will work on tomorrow. He also plans on tightening the bolts for the heat exchanger. I did a lot of work on the computer. The written blog is ready to post, but I still have some photos to finish. Tomorrow perhaps?
Susan and Darren had planned to leave yesterday to beat the wind, but thought better of it. They will stay to Thursday or Friday depending on the weather. Pete paid for another 2 days, which will bring us to Thursday. The dock hand said that everyone is waiting out the winds. Looking at the current forecasts, it will probably be Friday before most people move. The good news is that the large boats will be at least a day or 2 ahead of us getting to Coinjock, so there should be space for us slow boats.
I did some reading and blog writing and read..

Tuesday, 5/10/22 ~ Morehead City ~ Day 4

The clouds cleared by early afternoon, but the winds, cold and rawness are still with us.
I took advantage of staying in place to do some cleaning and organizing. While Pete and Bailey were in the cockpit, I was able to scrub the floor. While up there, Pete found out that this weekend is a fishing tournament. First prize is $1 million! The boat across from us was just bought on Saturday. They already changing the name. They have been working on it every day no matter the wind and weather. All the big fishing boats are prepping as much as possible. The fishing rods and “jewelry” (the reels), that are being loaded and checked, are substantial in size, weight and cost. One could say that they are very serious, and this is a very big deal!
Pete returned to work and I loaded some of blog and started loading photos.

Wednesday, 5/11/22 ~ Morehead City ~ Day 5

Found I number of photos that I wanted to use, but were missing. They were still up in the ICloud. I spent the afternoon processing photos after they were downloaded.
Pete replaced clamps on heat exchanger and did the engine check for when we get underway.
Winds still in the 20’s with the rawness and cold continuing. We cruisers are held up in our boats. Having a loaner car is very helpful. I had it reserved for the 4-6 pm block.
The prepping also continues for weekend tournament. The boats are being cleaned and prepped, while new gear is installed and the old tackle is inspected, and new lines installed. This wind and the resulting sea state had delayed the tournament from Thursday to Saturday.
YEA! Week 3 is now finished, photos uploaded, and it has been posted to the blog!!! I also started uploading week 4 and more photos. I know that my love for photography is the reason blogging takes so much time. I also know Pete and I love having the blog. (though I am sure he would prefer I take and use less photos for the blog –but continue taking photos just for me.)
By 4, Pete and I had the car and headed to the Post Office. The extra toilet parts from the old unit are on their way to another 350 owner. Then it was over to Harris Teeter for food stuff on my list. We were actually back at 5:30-ish. We were able to unload and put away all the groceries and be ready at 6 to join Susan and Darin to head over for dinner.
We had an enjoyable dinner at No Name Pizza. I guess you could say that we ate internationally: American cheeseburger, Italian chicken parmigiana, Mexican chicken quesadilla and Greek lamb gyro. On the way back, we couldn’t pass the DQ without having desert.
Once back we intended to watch TV, but the winds and cloud cover seems to have interfered with the DISH reception. It was a good excuse to read for a while.

Thursday, 5/12/22 ~ Morehead City ~ Day 6

Pete worked a full day. I continued to work on week 4, downloaded and started to weed and process photos.
Pete tried to diagnose DISH problem, but with no luck. He is able to log into the DISH settings from his computer. The one red flashing light is not the fatal diagnosis. He will call the tech desk tomorrow to fid out more.
By about 3:30 this afternoon, the winds finally subsided! Temps are climbing, but we still have complete cloud cover.
We said farewell to SEA GEM. They think they might be staying to Saturday as we pay for 5 days and get 7! We plan on leaving tomorrow even though there might be more showers. Oh yea, we are also the first to receive SEA GEM’s boat card. They picked them up earlier today.

Friday, 5/13/22 ~ Morehead City YM to River Dunes, Oriental, NC
Today:           34.0 miles          6.2 hours           ICW ST Mile: 175
Total:         1861.9 miles     371.55 hours

Rains started about midnight and were heavy on and off all night. We woke early so decided to head out early to work around the rains. Just as Pete was returning from walking the dog, the skies started spitting.

We were away from the dock about 7:30, just when the rains returned. We could hear thunder in the distance coming from the ocean. We made it into the Adams Creek Canal before the storm passed just to the east of us. Midway up the creek, the rains stopped. We had the current with us about 2/3 of the way. As the current changed it was only an mph less. As SEA GEM passed, I was able to grab a couple of photos of her. Once out on the Neuse River, the rollers were about 1-1.5 foot.

Skies cleared as we entered the creek to River Dunes. There was still thunderheads building to our SSE.
Scott helped us in. He is a one man show today. There were 12 boats that left here this morning. Come to think about it, at least 5 boats left Morehead City heading north on the ICW. Scott checked AID earlier this morning. He said that it looked as if there was a train headed north on the ICW. There were reports on Facebook that boats that had left Coinjock in the fog, returned back to Coinjock to await the fog lifting. Well, most did except for those who went aground in the extreme low tides caused by the constant, strong north winds.
River Dunes is slowly growing. Scott said that a number of lot owners have finally started to build their homes. Eight units are currently under construction.
Pete called DISH and we seem to have a broken wire somewhere. I think it will wait until we get home.
While sitting in the cockpit, Pete spotted a group of people over by the chapel. It must have been a rehearsal for the wedding tomorrow. A tent is up in the field by the marina. Tables and chairs were put up sometime around dinner.
The clouds were intriguing in shapes, size and brightness against the deep blue skies. I was hoping to get a beautiful sunset, but the clouds took over the sky before the sun set. I was a little disappointed, but I have others.

Well, tomorrow will be another short day. Since we are heading up to Dowry Creek Marina, I contacted SV EVENGELIQUE. They are spending time there this summer and are in their slip. We will get together tomorrow. We are looking forward to it.
