Carolina Beach to Myrtle Beach Yacht Club, NC

Today:      53 miles      7.6 hours            ICW St M “335.5”
Total:     527 miles    86.4 hours

The rains came in waves and some of them were pretty heavy.  The last one to come through at around 5:40 am waking us before the 6:15 alarm.  The weather predictions were for spotty rains and winds this morning out of the SSW at 16 that would decrease during the day. We decided to get up and get going since the winds hadn’t arrived yet. Dog walked, dinghy hoisted, and we were underway by 6:40.  The fog was light, but still present as we left.

Views of Snow's Cut ~

We did buck the current through Snow’s Cut, but once on the Cape Fear River, we rode the flood tide.  Towards the bottom of the river, we were doing 10.5 mph!  It was great until we entered Southport and suddenly crabbed sideways about 40 feet due to the current.  Then, we were lucky to be doing 4 mph!

Passing Zimmerman’s Marina in Southport, we saw MY RED HEAD (Jeff and Karen Siegel's) looking real pretty, sporting a new coat of paint!
We traveled most of the day with SV AIMLESS.  Pete and he chatted over the radio about New Bern and his Catalina 380, the water depths and final destination of Key West.

Views along our way ~

A very impressive Steele pilings and pier!

Bridge fenders destroyed by
water and oysters!

We fueled up and remained tied up to the fuel dock at Myrtle Beach Yacht Club for the night.  Bailey couldn’t wait to get to shore.  She had been panting for the last hour or so of the trip. This wasn’t time for her walk, but with her intestinal problems, today wasn’t a good day.  Hopefully, she is back to holding it for 10-12 hours like she had been.
Pete’s mom called while we were underway.  Her scooter has problem and she was in a mild panic.  We actually found a company near her that rents and repairs scooters.  When we called with the information, she had calmed down and found someone to help her get to Mah Jongg this evening.  The repair person will be there on Wednesday.
While catching up on the news and Facebook, it was sad to read that the USCG called off a 2-week search for 82-year old Maryland man, single handing a 29-foot sailboat heading to Florida.  We have listened to all the Coast Guard Stations from Norfolk to Charleston broadcasting the notification, concerned and knowing his chances of being found decreased each day. Thoughts go out to his family and friends.
That was not the only sad news we heard today. Just miles from where we lived in Delaware, my favorite place, Willey’s Farm, suffered a catastrophic fire this morning. It was such a unique place. A family owned business, which offered fresh produce, mostly locally grown, organic dairy products, health foods, home made snacks and candies, Amish made baked goods; a deli which offered the world’s best chicken salad, custom made sandwiches, homemade soups, breakfast, lunch and dinner items to grab and go;  a nursery selection and garden shop; a year round unique gift shop and of course a super Christmas shop, and their staff was the best. They have been an important part of the community for more than 40 years and will be missed while they rebuild.
Pete switched the TV satellite coverage from Norfolk to Charleston, but there is a problem with the satellite connections.  He will need to follow up with KVH. So, after dinner we just read, which is definitely OK!
